Stroll down memory lane
Recently I received an e-mail from LCDR Clark Paton, USN (Ret.). He was in the jazz, marching and concert bands from 1976-80 and he served in the US Navy for 22 years, he even serving as a volunteer bandmaster, by virtue of his time in the Sahuaro band, for a couple years onboard the USS Saratoga, an aircraft carrier (in 1991-92). He stated “If you think you have logistical problems with moving musical equipment by bus, just imagine moving it from a ship anchored off shore 20 miles!” He currently resides in Mesquite, Texas.Enclosed are a few scans from his high school yearbooks. The first one is from 1978. Mr. Paton stated that the huge drum major, by the way, in the top photo, is, appropriately enough, named Ken Stout. Mr. Webb is in the top photo, He was Sahuaro's first band director, Mr. Carlyle Webb, passed away in 2004. Mr. Paton is in the bottom photo labeled "me."
The next photo is of 1979, when the band got new and improved uniforms. They were much more military in nature, and the band absolutely loved them. The drum majors were even better. He is in the top photo on the far right.
The 3rd photo is of 1980, when the band had a new band director, Mr. Amman. It is taken on the steps near the administration building. He is wearing a white shirt/tie. Mr. Paton is holding the tenor sax right above him.
